Gespräch/ Talk: Why Paintings Work
Jurriaan Benschop will talk about his book Why Paintings Work (2023) which presents the work of dozens of contemporary painters and, in doing so, poses the question, ‘Why does this painting work?’ In what way does it have meaning? For this he considers both visual aspects, such as the depicted motif and paint application, and the concepts, beliefs and motivations that lie behind the paintings.
Jurriaan Benschop is a Dutch writer and curator who is based in Athens and Berlin. He is a contributor to The Brooklyn Rail, Artforum and other venues. He is the author of Salt in the Wound. Encountering Contemporary Artists across Europe (2019) and Why Painting Works (2023). Exhibitions that he has curated include What We Learn from Land and Sea (Cycladic Arts, Paros, 2023), A Grammar of Gestures (Kourd Gallery, Athens, 2021-22), Young Americans (Donopoulos IFA, Thessaloniki, 2021-22), Taking Root (KIT, Düsseldorf, 2019-20) and A Matter of Touch (Kunst- und Projekthaus Torstrasse 111, Berlin, 2020). He has been lecturing at art schools and universities in Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, Riga, Tallinn, Vienna, Helsinki and other cities.

Gespräch mit den G.R.I.T.-Künstler*innen/ Talk with the G.R.I.T. Artists
Dr. Helen Gørrill will probe G.R.I.T.’s founding reference to art critic, Barry Schwabsky’s, The Observer Effect: On Contemporary Painting. Schwabsky’s belief that, painting does not need to pitch figurative and abstract painting as opponent representations, that current painting embraces the body of both maker/ viewers. In conversation with G.R.I.T artists, Gorrill will seek how G.R.I.T. artists explore a sense of self as a visual, visceral experience - painted gesture.
Dr. Helen Gørrill is a writer/ artist, curator, feminist & art historian, lead in the field of painting/ gender equality. Current 3-book deal with Bloomsbury Academic Press (London & New York): 1, Women Can’t Paint: Gender, the Glass Ceiling & Values in Contemporary Art (2020); 2, her new monograph for Bloomsbury, War Paint: Gender Inequality in the Virtual Artworld; 3, the upcoming Wife, Witch, Whore: Essential Conversations about Gender, Art & Culture.

Ich lade dazu ein, mit mir zusammen ein Experiment in der Kategorie „Zeichnung“ zu erleben.
Nonverbal.
1. VIDEO-Vorführung: ca. 9min
2. Zeichnen mit mir und allen die Lust haben: ca. 15-20min.
Ich versuche zu zeigen, warum Zeichnung lesbar ist, verbindend ist, ohne gelesene Worte auskommen kann.
Und direkt „aus der Hand kommt“.
Und was es mit der „Geste“ in der Zeichnung, als künstlerisches Merkmal meiner Meinung nach auf sich hat.
Mitbringen für Teilnehmer: gern Imagination - und gern Aufmerksamkeit., dazu etwas zum Zeichnen nach Belieben, je nachdem ob sie stehen oder sitzen - Bleistift, Kugelschreiber, Papier DIN A5, A4… kariert liniert. MUSS aber nicht sein.
I invite you to join me in an experiment in the category "drawing".

2. Drawing with me and everyone who wants to: approx. 15-20min. I try to show why drawing is legible, connecting, can do without read words, and comes directly "from the hand" and what the "gesture" in the drawing is all about as an artistic feature in my opinion.
Participants are welcome to bring: imagination - and attention, plus something to draw as you like, depending on whether you are standing or sitting - pencil, pen, paper DIN A5, A4... squared lined. But it doesn't have to be.

Statement: Ich arbeite vor allem in den Medien Zeichnung, Animation und Video und suche nach Formen und Bildernvon zeitloser Gültigkeit. In meinen Werken fungieren unsere kleinsten sozialen Einheiten, die Regeln und die Spannungen im Umgang mit unserem Selbst, mit dem Nächsten, dem Partner und der Familie als politischer Schlüsselzur Gesellschaft. Dabei reagiere ich auf aktuelle Strömungen, politische Diskussionen und persönliche Thematiken.

Gespräch/ Talk: Traces, Tagging and Place-Making
Benjamin Rubloff (US) is a Berlin-based artist whose paintings are based on found graffiti tags. His new book, ‘When I was there,” explores these gestures as an entry point for considering the experience of place and time in the city.
Benjamin Rubloff is a Berlin-based artist and educator. He started out as a landscape painter, working conceptually within the genre to investigate how issues of politics and ideology are inscribed onto the environment. He completed his MFA at Cornell University’s interdisciplinary program where he studied art alongside histories of architecture, landscape and urbanism. He is a recent recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant for Painting and the author of a new book, When I was there, which combines painting, writing and site photographs to investigate the experience of place.

In the Performative Intervention jumpSTARt which was developed especially for G.R.I.T. Deli Sánchez will activate new PARTs (acrylic, canvas, lacktex oilcloth, PE film) by Michaela Zimmer
In der Performative Intervention für G.R.I.T. wird Deli Sánchez neue PARTs (Acryl, Leinwand, Lacktex Öltuch, PE Folie) von Michaela Zimmer aktivieren.
Deli Sánchez is a dancer and choreographer from Spain. She has been working with visual artists and her choreographies were shown at CAC Museum Malaga and on Sitges Film Festival. She teaches classical and contemporary dance at Conservatorio Profesional Sagrario Ruiz-Piñero” (Cáceres).
Michaela Zimmer’s cross-disciplinary work visualises collectively experienced physical movement.
Repeated motion sequences are inscribed as physical resonance into our body memory.
After analysing protocols of this process, she transfers the results in abstracted form to paintings which get cut out and sewn into wearable objects.
These PARTs are activated in international collaborations. Following the activation process performative interventions based on shared sensorimotor and aesthetic processes are jointly created.
Photographs and site-specific installations accompany the process.
Michaela Zimmer visualisiert in ihrer interdisziplinären künstlerischen Praxis kollektiv erfahrene physische Bewegung.
Wiederholte Bewegungsabläufe schreiben sich als physische Resonanz in unser Körpergedächtnis. Nach Auswertung von Protokollen dieses Prozesses überträgt sie die Resultate in abstrahierter Form in Malerei, die ausgeschnitten zu tragbaren Objekten vernäht wird.
Diese PARTs werden in internationalen Kollaborationen aktiviert. Die im Aktivierungsprozess geteilte sensomotorische und ästhetische Erfahrung führt in der Folge zu gemeinsam entwickelten Performativen Interventionen.
Fotografien und ortsspezifische Installationen begleiten den Prozess.
